The Pew Charitable Trusts began to formally evaluate their grant-funded programs in 1985. Between 1985 and May 1988 outside evaluators reviewed 14 trust-initiated programs. In 1987 programmatic reviews in health policy, and youth employment and job training led to the development of new program guidelines.
